While editing Fat Ray’s music video for “LEATHER KNUCKLES,” produced by Antman Wonder, I had the opportunity to capture some breathtaking drone shots that, although not all made it into the final cut, were a testament to the challenge and excitement of night filming in downtown Detroit.
Flying a drone in a bustling city at night proved to be a unique and daunting experience. It was my first time maneuvering around tall buildings and navigating through magnetic interference, which added an extra layer of tension to the flight. Despite the difficulties, the results were impressive, especially the shots near the People Mover, which turned out to be some of the most captivating footage.
St. Patrick’s Night brought its own set of challenges, from random passer-bys to the general hustle and bustle of the city. The experience was a reminder of the intricate skill required to operate a drone in such conditions. While I wouldn’t recommend this type of shoot to just any drone pilot due to the inherent risks, the final product was well worth the effort. This project remains one of Auxiliary Cinema’s most underrated music videos, showcasing not only the city’s night-time beauty but also the dedication and skill involved in capturing it.
